According to Chapman, these days it is usually marketing: If the designs and concepts of appeal were more diverse, it wouldn’t be an issue.” Female characters are too limited in the notion that they always have to be stereotypically beautiful. That wasn’t his choice, but the choice of the studio’s directive – coming from marketing and executives down through producers and directors on to the character designers – which then goes to the animators. It’s incredibly difficult to keep a female character on model and appealing within the limited directives he was given. “For the position he was in as an animator, he was absolutely right. To my surprise, she was defensive of Di Salvo: In search of further answers, I turned to Brenda Chapman, the first woman to direct a major studio-animated film ( Prince of Egypt, 1998), the first female director on a Pixar project ( Brave, 2012) and the first female recipient of the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature (also for Brave). Most of Pixar’s creative strategy over the past 25 years has involved asking, “What if had emotions?” 2 The fact that Di Salvo believes this, however, indicates a longstanding attitude in the animation industry that female characters are difficult because they have to be pretty – an issue that is only exacerbated by the fact that animation seems to have one model of female beauty. Just to be clear, I’m not saying Di Salvo offered a good reason for this – in no way is the fact that female characters have emotions the reason they’ve been sidelined and homogenised. “Historically speaking, animating female characters are really, really difficult, because they have to go through these range of emotions, but they’re very, very - you have to keep them pretty… So, having a film with two hero female characters was really tough.” Lino Di Salvo, the head animator of Frozen, really hit the nail on the head while putting his foot in his mouth in 2013: Why the female volcano must look distinctly human and conventionally attractive, while her counterpart is definitely a volcano, hits at the heart of one of the biggest issues in current film animation – women existing as a separate, codified entity, with a limited, often sexualised design and relatively narrow narrative role. Telling the love story of two volcanoes through song (and the potentially devastating story of their tectonic reunion), Lava falls into the same trap that so many animated films do – it makes a brilliant, evocative male character from an anthropomorphised volcano, and it makes a female character from a volcano that looks like a pretty lady. Yet the opening short, Lava, is problematic at best. It’s also a real step forward for Pixar in terms of female representation – the whole film takes place in a young girl’s head, and the main conflict involves two female coded emotions. Inside Out has a lot going for it – a genuine and moving narrative, beautiful animation and design, and a third act emotional gut punch that will leave the hardest of hardened heart sobbing quietly in the corner. ![]() Unveil the wisdom of your subconscious, understand the root of your choices, and step into a more conscious and fulfilling life. The ivy generator imports and exports obj+mtl files. This simple scheme reveals that the goal was not to provide a biological simulation of growing ivy but rather a simple approach to producing complex and convincing vegetation that adapts to an existing scene. The ivy grows from one single root following different forces: a primary growth direction (the weighted average of previous growth directions), a random influence, an adhesion force towards other objects, an up-vector imitating the phototropy of plants, and finally gravity. The result is a small tool allowing a virtual ivy to grow in your 3d world. Fortunately I was able to implement a procedural system so that the ivy would grow by itself. I was thinking of something complex, filled with vegetation - like trees overgrown with ivy. Who Can Rock a Quiff Haircut?Īs you can tell from its brief history, the quiff has always been favored by tastemakers and rule-breakers of fashion. While we know that the quiff has been a style mainstay for some 75-ish years, it’s possible that it has its origins in medieval times, when much of Europe rocked a coif, a close-fitting cap covering the top and sides of the head. How did the quiff get its name? No one knows for sure, but it is believed to have derived from the French word “coiffe,” which translates to hairstyle and traces its roots back to the armor that knights wore beneath their helmets during battle (badass, right?). The quiff gained even more steam during the British Teddy Boy movement of the 1980s, when guys cut their hair into dramatic quiffs with grown-out sideburns to go along with their Edwardian-era fashion, which often involved platform suede shoes (creepers) and drape jackets reminiscent of American zoot suits. Bad boy style icons like Elvis and James Dean sported some of the most well-known examples of this throwback style. In fact, it traces its roots back to the 1950s, during the peak of the pompadour. Though it brings an expressly modern flair, the quiff is certainly not new. This extra volume at the top brings plenty of styling potential, so anyone who wants to slay the quiff will definitely want to stock up on men’s hair products, especially the quiff essential-some high-quality hair putty or clay. Though the quiff comes in many variants (more on that below), at its most basic it combines elements of the old-school pompadour, the fauxhawk and the fade, creating a silhouette with long, upswept hair on the top-front, close to the forehead, and shorter locks at the back and sides. We’ll discuss the best lengths and face shapes for the quiff as well as explore the cut’s history, different variations and how to style one so not a single strand of hair looks out of place. In this guide, we’re covering both the basics and nitty-gritty of the quiff haircut to help you decide if it’s a style you want to add to your follicular portfolio. Similar to a pompadour, the quiff is a high-contrast cut that brings a stylish, confident aesthetic to any guy’s style. The quiff is a classic men’s haircut featuring long hair on the top, especially in the front, and trimmed hair at the back and sides. It can be worn by men with a preppy side, a punky side or a totally rebellious side, which is just part of the reason why it’s one of the most-requested cuts of the decade. Rocked by style informers like Justin Bieber, David Beckham and Conor McGregor, this edgy men’s haircut doesn’t discriminate. ![]() This ultra-popular yet surprisingly classic ‘do has been around for a century or more, but it’s having a serious comeback at the moment. ![]() When researching men’s haircuts, you’ve probably come across the quiff. |
